Velocity Nation
Velocitynation.com is an interactive site for bicycle racers and enthusiasts in the New York City area. The site draws thousands of daily visits from anonymous and registered users who read articles, view photo galleries and post comments. Commenting is a very important feature for the site.
The site had previously been running on a series of custom php and asp.net content management systems. None ever quite worked the way the site owners wanted, and this was holding them back from expanding and drawing advertising.
Big City Dev originally rebuilt the site on Drupal 5. It's now running on Drupal 6. Here are some of the key steps we took.
- Rebuilt exiting functionality.
- Implemented new design provided by outside designer.
- Imported some 2,000 pages, 40,000 comments and 3,000 users.
- Built a user-friendly Home Page Manager for site editors.
Features added:
- Issue tracking allows communication between editors and the site admin.
- Created a custom Drupal module for voting on comments.
- Created custom Drupal moduls for commenting and tagging individual filefield photos.
- Enabled posting images and text by iphone or email.
- Added an events calendar to which any site visitor may contribute.
Site growth capabilities:
- A national home site for non-local visitors.
- Affiliate cities using the same codebase and database.
Traffic
The site serves about 10,000 pages a day.
